About Ghent University Scholarship:

Ghent University Scholarship, Ph.D. “sandwich” scholarships are available via Ghent institution’s “Special Research Fund” (BOF) to qualified students from developing nations who would want to split their time between Ghent University (the “North”) and another institution in a developing nation (the “South”).


Ghent University only covers the first 24 months of the study in Ghent, so the applicant must secure full-time funding for the additional 24 months of research in the South.

  • Program degree: a Ph.D. degree.
  • Duration: 2 years.

Who can apply for the Ghent University Scholarship?

  • Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of one of the selected Global South countries (see below for a list of these countries). HERE.
  • The applicant, the supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University, and the supervisor at the partner university (South) are all required to submit the proposals together.
  • We will prioritize issues that are significant in the North-South context, but we do not limit the area of study in any way.
  • This opportunity is only open to degree students at Ghent University who are pursuing a doctoral degree (either alone or in a combined program).
  • No exchange students will be considered for this award.
  • Beginning doctoral students are the target audience for this program. It is acceptable for PhD candidates to have done some preliminary study, but only to a certain degree.
  • There must still be at least 36 months of doctorate research remaining to be completed at the time the fellowship begins (1/10/2025) in order to get the PhD.
  • The goal of this fellowship is to increase the number of female researchers at Ghent University.
  • So long as they are not the same gender, a supervisor at Ghent University may back up a maximum of two applicants per call.

Benefits of the Ghent University Scholarship:

  • There will be a monthly tuition fee of EUR 310.
  • The funding of EURO 8000 will pay the Ghent University promoter’s running costs as well as travel expenses for local promoters and learners.

  • Registration form.
  • The supervisor’s perspective on the applicant’s potential as a future researcher should also be considered.
  • Provide guidance on the ethical and biosafety aspects of the suggested research project.
