- Do not reuse your resume. Show character, curiosity, and interest in the field you are applying for in your cover letter.
- Don’t limit yourself to writing about yourself; use the cover letter to tell the company why you want to work for them and what they will get out of employing you.
- In the letter, use vacancy/job-specific keywords.
- Share a success that demonstrates your ability to handle the issues the company is facing.
- Express passion by demonstrating your drive and interest in a certain area of the work or the company, but avoid being overly flattering.
- Explain why you share the same values by referencing the organization’s mission and guiding principles, especially for NGOs.
Guideline for the Format of the Cover letter:
- Be brief. Maximum 1 page, usually 3 paragraphs.
- Hundreds of applications for jobs are sent to employers. An employer won’t read your cover letter if it is too long.
- Make sure to proofread and spell-check your letter. Use the grammar and spelling checker.
- Use brief phrases and provide space between paragraphs.
- Make sure your cover letter has the exact month, date, company name, job title, and name of the person to whom you are submitting the application at the top.
- Use simply formatting for your CV.
