About MEXT Japan Scholarship:
The Japanese Embassy in Afghanistan is pleased to announce that the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) is offering scholarship opportunities (Master’s Course & Doctoral Course) to Afghan students who wish to pursue academic endeavors in Japan during the Japanese academic year 2024 through the MEXT Scholarship Program.
The award will be distributed in accordance with the “Application Guidelines: Japanese (MEXT) Scholarships for 2024 (Research Students).”
Scholarship details:
- Host Country: Japan.
- Program degree: Master’s and Ph.D.
- Sponsored by: Government of Japan.
- Type of Scholarship: fully funded.
- Nation: Afghanistan and international students.
Scholarship deadline:
- Deadline for recommendation of application by the AKF along with completed application forms of those who are recommended: July 15, 2023.
- Written Examination or paper test in Kabul: July 4, 2023.
- Interview date: end of July 2023.
- Final result announcement: December 2023.
Scholarship Qualifications.
- Born after April 2, 1989, and under 35 years old with a B.A. or comparable degree.
- Being of Afghan descent.
- Outstanding academic accomplishments.
- Sound mental and physical condition.
- A desire and dedication to explore and advance ties between Afghanistan and Japan.
- Adequate spoken and written English competence (for English-taught courses) or Japanese language ability (for Japanese-taught courses).
- Selected candidates are anticipated to visit Japan in April 2024.
Scholarship Documents Requirement:
- Application form.
- Application form for placement preference.
- Study Area and Research Strategy.
- A copy of your academic record for each semester you attended college.
- A diploma or degree certificate from the university you attended.
- A letter of recommendation from the president/dean, or the academic adviser, of the university you are currently attending or recently attended.
- A medical record.
- Thesis abstract.
- Language proficiency certification.
- A letter of recommendation from the current employer
Benefits of the Scholarship:
- The MEXT Scholarship comes with full funding.
- Living expenses of around 140000 yen (approximately $1000) per month will be supplied.
- Education costs are free.
- Transport to and from Japan: An economy-class flight ticket to and from Japan will be supplied (local travel and other expenses are the student’s responsibility).

Individuals interested in applying for the MEXT Scholarship can find the appropriate application form, health certificate, and reference letter example linked below. Following that, individuals can transmit digital copies of their documents to the embassy email address shown below for screening reasons. Only those who have been shortlisted will be asked to bring their original papers to the interview.
The selection will be done in collaboration with the Aga Khan Foundation by the Japanese embassy in Afghanistan.
