Summary of the Job:
The quickly growing COVID-19 outbreak created new challenges to Afghanistan’s already overburdened health system. Due to a long-running armed conflict, a lack of social protection, inadequate resources, low healthcare capability, and poor preparedness and coordination systems, the country confronts numerous challenges in responding to COVID-19. To address this, increased multi-sectoral preparedness, operational readiness, and response capacity are urgently needed to limit COVID-19’s spread and ameliorate its short and long-term repercussions.
WHO will conduct a three-year program in Afghanistan to mitigate the health effects of Covid-19 pandemics, including preventing new infections, slowing transmission, and reducing morbidity and mortality linked with Covid-19, with financing from the EU and its own contribution? The project is in line with the UN’s Covid-19 response plan, the EU’s Covid-19 pandemic support framework, and Afghanistan’s national Covid-19 response strategy. The project’s main goals will be to improve COVID-19 patients’ diagnostic capacity, surveillance system, case management, infection control, and nutritional support.
Purpose of the position:
The applicant will work at a (Covid-19 testing laboratory) in one of the 12 provinces listed above, primarily conducting Covid-19 laboratory testing using RT-PCR techniques or other methods as needed. He/She will be in charge of reporting test findings, quality control, and lab equipment upkeep. If necessary, the H/She will perform routine laboratory tests in clinical areas such as chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, bacteriology, serology, parasitology, and blood banking to offer information for use in the treatment and diagnosis of patients seeking care at the provincial hospital.

As part of the COVID-19 EMERGENCY Response and Health Systems Preparedness Project, WHO’s mission is to assist countries in preventing, preparing for, detecting, rapidly responding to, and recovering from outbreaks and other public health emergencies, as well as to coordinate international action when necessary. The World Health Organization backs the positions.
Job responsibility:
Under the direct supervision of the head of Kunduz Regional Laboratory In-charge, the applicant shall undertake the following activities.
Main job responsibilities:
- Taking samples, processing them, and analyzing them.
- Using RT-PCR and other testing procedures to perform tests on samples.
- Create and conduct laboratory tests in accordance with established methods, making observations and interpreting results.
- Following safety recommendations for handling and storing chemicals, consumables, and other materials.
- Obtaining and delivering laboratory supplies.
- Responding to visitors’ and employees’ questions and needs.
- Administrative activities such as keeping track of notes, recording procedures, and putting together orders.
- Use a computer to calculate test findings and report them.
- Ensure that all equipment is in good working order and that the work environment is kept clean.
- Maintain a safe work environment by adhering to all safety, health, and environmental rules and regulations.
- Any additional duty that the supervisor assigns.

- Demonstrated experience as a Lab Technician or in a related role.
Educations:
- A diploma in medical laboratory technology from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Higher Education is required.
- Desirable Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Higher Education.
- Minimum of two years of related experience in clinical laboratory procedures is required.
- Working experience in a Covid 19 lab, ideally at a national or regional level, is preferred.
