About the University of Sussex:
Due to its efforts to promote and accept forced migrants, the University of Sussex has been given the designation of the University of Sanctuary. This sanctuary scholarship is one method the university helps students who are not eligible for student loans so they can enroll in their desired degree program at Sussex. The scholarship bears the phrase “Everyone has the right to education” from Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Scholarship eligibility:
This scholarship is exclusively available to candidates who have been given a temporary form of leave or forced migrant in order to provide them with the financial support they need to enroll in a degree program at the University of Sussex. Therefore, in order to apply, applicants will need to present proof of this. Application requirements for the University of Sussex Article 26 Scholarship should be as follows:
- An acceptance letter to study for a bachelor’s degree at Sussex should have been sent to applicants.
- Candidates for the Foundation, Year 1, or Year 2 may apply.
- The applicant must have made an application for recognition as a refugee to the UK Home Office or be dependent on someone who has. Hold a temporary visa allowing you to remain in the UK while you apply for asylum.
- An immigrant who is not qualified for assistance from Student Finance England may submit an application.
- Alternatively, the applicant could be the spouse, child, or unaccompanied minor of an applicant who is seeking asylum.
- Due to their existing immigration status, they are unable to receive student financial aid from the UK government.
Who is not eligible:
- If you do, you are not qualified for this award.
- are submitting a degree application to a school other than the University of Sussex.
- are entering their last year of a Sussex degree.
- are taking a course online.
- pursuing one of the courses that are excluded, as indicated below.
How to apply
You must have been offered a spot on a course at Sussex in order to be eligible for the scholarship. We can still consider candidates for the scholarship if they have an interview scheduled unless your application to Sussex calls for one (for example, social work applicants).
