About the residency program:
The Volkswagen Foundation in Germany has created a new financing initiative for Afghan intellectuals and scientists since many Afghans have been forced to evacuate their nation as a result of the Taliban’s quick progress and assumption of power in Afghanistan. The goal of this grant initiative is to assist exiled Afghan academics in continuing their research in Germany while also assisting them in integrating into German culture and the local scientific system.

Benefits of the opportunity:
- Personal costs are covered by primary funds.
- There is also the potential of receiving funds to pay non-personal expenses. Eligible applicants will receive a maximum of 150,000 EUR.
- Opportunity to continue research initiatives in a working group in Germany for up to two years.
- Requests for fellowships or job contracts for up to two years are possible.
- Depending on the researchers’ job level and family situation, different sums will be awarded.
- In addition to personal expenditures and travel costs, the researcher may request funds of up to 10,000 EUR each year.
Who is eligible to apply?
- To be a doctorate, post-doctoral, or established Afghan academic at all levels.
- Afghan scholars from all fields who must leave or have just departed the country.

a person who is not eligible for this program:
- Those who have access to a safe country’s domicile owing to multiple citizenships or other options, as well as those who have German citizenship.
- Researchers who have completed a German university admission exam.
- Researchers who have received funding from the Philip Schwartz Initiative or any other initiative that supports scholars in danger.
Persecuted writers and artists should keep track of whether they’re:
- persons who have access to residence in safe countries due to multiple citizenship or other circumstances and German citizens.
- researchers who hold German university entrance qualifications (“Bildungsinländer”).
- researchers who have been funded in the context of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative or other funding programs directed at “scholars at risk”.
Documents requirement:
- Applications (5-6 pages with a maximum of 2,500 words) must be submitted electronically using the Volkswagen Foundation’s online application system. You must upload the following documents as “enclosures” (pdf files) to the system:
- The value projected to flow from the proposed partnership to the refugee scholar as well as the host is considered in this research proposal.
- The suggested collaboration’s design and setup.
- a connection between the project and the host’s research background, and/or proof of its relevance to the current project
- A brief CV and a list of the scholar’s five most relevant publications (if appropriate) are required.

- Statement of support from the host in regards to the scholar’s present career condition and personal circumstances.
- Academic qualifications and an evaluation of this person’s future career prospects in Germany (in research/academics).
